ABOUT US
Stepney Workers Club is an independent London footwear brand founded on the values of alternative thinking, inclusivity and belonging.
Our name and spirit come from the traditional workers sports clubs of London: social spaces where people gathered through sport, leisure, music, conversation and shared identity. SWC believes sport should be open, social and expressive, rather than elitist, exclusive or defined by competition.
SWC gives shape to the cultures that live outside of elite performance sport and generic over-hyped fashion: the amateur clubs, niche rituals, off beat references, alternative playlists, local scenes, and everyday forms of movement that bring people together.
Freedom of Sport - Freedom of Thought
At its core, SWC stands for Freedom of Sport, Freedom of Thought.
Freedom of Sport:
Movement without the pressure to perform. Sport not as dominance, hierarchy, achievement or elite performance, but instead as ritual, release, social connection, physical & emotional wellbeing, local culture, strange clubs and amateur devotion. Communities formed through movement.
Freedom of Thought:
The space to be specific, curious, obsessive, odd, anti-obvious and culturally sideways. It is a belief in alternative ideas, niche references, subculture, music, art, counter-culture and the unique communities that give life its shape. References that do not need to be diluted for instant mass appeal. Together, these ideas define SWC’s worldview: a brand for people who move differently, think freely and find meaning outside the mainstream.
Our Handshake
When we started S.W.C it was the unity and inclusiveness of traditional Workers Sports Clubs that inspired our core brand values and our ‘Handshake’ logo.
Our club message ‘Freedom Of Sport, Freedom Of Thought’ and the handshake symbol represent these values, community and liberal thinking that we associate with these groups.
